Since 1878 when Coeur d’ Alene was originally established as a military fort, the city has continued to grow and evolve into the destination resort community it is today. In the early 1890’s, Coeur d’ Alene served as the railroad and steamboat transfer point for the mines in the Silver Valley. The name Silver Valley refers to the mining communities just east of Coeur d’ Alene where over 1.2 billion ounces of silver have been mined since 1884. In addition to silver, other precious metals and rare earth minerals have been mined out of the Silver Valley.
